The Fourth Annual Merseyside Transport Awards were held at the BT Convention Centre on 2nd December 2010.
The award winners were;
TravelWise High School 2010 Award
St Margarets Church of England Voluntary Aided High School in Liverpool
Their scheme run by students, has successfully promoted cycling and public transport for a number of years and has grown and evolved to embrace sustainable transport fr the journey to school. A whopping 75% of the students use public transport, 10% walk or cycle and only 5% travel by car.
TravelWise Primary School 2010 Award
Whiston Willis Primary School in Knowsley
This school has shown outstanding commitment to its travel plan, implementing a number of measures this year including installation and promotion of cycle storage facility, installation of a walkers waiting area, and active participation in both Walk to School and the Big Walk to school.
TravelWise Organisation of the Year 2010 Award
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service
For a year round programme of activities designed to not only influence staff to consider alternatives to single occupancy car use - but to actively demonstrate them. Specific projects included;
FreightWise 2010 Award
Peel Ports
Launched in October 2007 by Peel Ports the Liverpool - Manchester Barge Shuttle provides a daily service for the sustainable distribution of containers. Over the last 3 years the Barge has handled in the region of 25,000 units removing an equivalent number of HGV's from the highway network. There is considerable opportunity to increase the frequency and capacity of the service in conjunction with the development of the deepwater Seaforth River Terminal and the development of a number of multi-modal port facilities upon the Ship Canal - for example at Port Salford and Port Warrington.

Breckfield & North Everton Neighbourhood Council
For their very successful and diverse range of projects in getting people to improve their health and well being. One of many key projects has been their North Liverpool Cycle Club which encourages participation in cycling at all levels of experience. Addressing issues of employment and skills in one of the countries most deprived areas, the BNENC has successfully employed two people through the Future Jobs Fund to work with the cycle club as trained mechanics.
Going the Extra Mile 2010 Award
Northern Rail
This year Northern Rail pulled out all the stops to help the record numbers of visitors to the Matthew Street Festival have a smooth journey to and from the Festival through delivery of a comprehensive train plan that provided 6,500 additional seats, additional stops at stations on Manchester airport- Liverpool services and provided further capacity through buses at stations closest to Liverpool where passengers were unable to join trains.

The (Speke) Estuary Commerce Park Occupiers
They have developed an Area Travel Plan, with the aim of reducing single occupancy car use and increasing accessibility by all modes of travel right across the park. Businesses on the park include:
This strategy is now being implemented by a forum of key representatives, which promotes better integration between organisations searching for common solutions to transport and access issues.
