Overcoming barriers to key opportunities and services such as jobs, healthcare and education is the most important issue for the Local Transport Plan for Merseyside, in particular the need to tackle the high levels of worklessness experienced in many of Merseyside's communities.
Our aim is to ensure that we promote social inclusion by overcoming those transport barriers which impact on an individual's ability to access job and training opportunities and the other essential services they need to improve their quality of life.
The Accessibility Strategy sets out a range of measures to ensure that particularly, those living in the most disadvantaged areas of Merseyside are able to access the opportunities arising from economic and social regeneration.
However, improving accessibility to goods and services is not just about more and better public transport but also looks at how services are delivered. Therefore a key part of our programme is to ensure that we work with a wider range of partners such as Jobcentre Plus, Primary Care Trusts, the Learning and Skills Council and Local Education Authorities to develop and deliver the Accessibility Strategy.
This collaborative approach has seen the Merseyside Transport Partnership being awarded Beacon Status for our pioneering work on improving accessibility through projects such as the ground breaking Lets Get Moving programme which is providing Neighbourhood Travel Teams, WorkWise and Independent Travel Training.
