Mersey Dee Alliance Transport Group
Integrating Accessibility and Land Use Planning 29th November 2007 at Chester Town Hall
This half day seminar was attended by approximately
50 delegates from across the Mersey Dee sub-region from various
sectors including transport, planning, economic development and
health. There were a range of presentations and a panel discussion
to explore the issues.
Ann Morley from the Department for Transport set the scene on the
Accessibility Planning agenda in England, and subsequent topics
varied from access to employment and health, case studies and the
Welsh perspective. Of particular note on integrating transport and
planning was the Supplementary Planning Document on Transport and
Accessibility from the Merseyside Policy Unit, which seeks to
ensure access to new developments by all modes of transport through
the planning process. This, and other Merseyside work on
Accessibility has been recognised as good practice by the
Department for Transport.
The panel discussion brought up in particular the need for the
Department for Work and Pensions to engage more strongly in the
Accessibility agenda, and the MDA Transport group will be taking
this forward, along with progress towards an Accessibility
Strategy/Plan for the cross-border area.
