Personal Travel Planning

Personal Travel Planning (PTP) is a technique that encourages people to make more sustainable travel choices.

By delivering information, incentives and motivation to individuals, it seeks to overcome the habitual use of the car, enabling more journeys to be made on foot, bike, bus, train or in shared cars.

During 2010, Merseyside Transport Partnership operated the last of a three year residential PTP project in West Derby, Liverpool after a 2008 pilot study in Childwall and a larger Wirral based scheme in Heswall, Irby & Pensby during the summer of 2009.

The PTP project for Merseyside had the following aims:-

  • reduce private motor vehicle kms among participants particularly for morning peak trips into Liverpool city centre;
  • establish sustainable travel patterns among participants; and
  • reduce carbon emissions from travel
